Icy cold watermelon refreshes and hydrates on a summer day like nothing else.

Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) grows in Florida in summer and winter. If you plan to grow it in your backyard, allow plenty of space for this sprawling vine.

Look for watermelon juice (aguas frescas) at farmers markets and juice stands – at Fort Lauderdale’s Thursday farmers market at Imperial Point, fresh watermelon juice is a staple  – and pick up icy wedges at Robert Is Here in Homestead. And try these summery recipes:

Grilled watermelon steaks
Serves 4 | Use a small seedless watermelon (about 4-5 lbs) for this recipe. Remove the rind before cutting into
