Florida avocados are creamy and delicious, but because they’re lower in fat than Hass, treat them differently. For toast and guacamole, “don’t whip it to death,” advises farmer Margie Pikarsky of Bee Heaven Farm. “Make it chunky. It will be nuttier, creamier and lighter.”

Easy Ways to Enjoy Florida Avocados

Brooks Tropicals in Homestead sells wholesale to foodservice, restaurants and grocery stores across the U.S. and Canada. Their SlimCado brand has up to half the fat and a third fewer calories than the Hass avocado. Brooks’ Mary Ostlund offers these tips:
• Cut it in half and grill it with a squirt of lime
• Make an avocado smoothie: add a touch of yogurt, some honey and passionfruit
• Alternate avocado slices with fruits for a fresh kabob
• Cut the avocado in half, carefully scoop out the pulp, and use the skin as the dish
• For her guacamole, Ostlund swears by Concord Food Guacamole mix, a seasoning packet that includes dehydrated onion, sour cream powder, lemon juice powder, spices, garlic powder and dehydrated red bell pepper
