The most common mistake is applying granular fertilizer in clumps close to the trunk. This is bad for the feeder roots, which are closer to the drip line. Next to the trunk are large roots that store water and anchor the tree. Instead, scatter fertilizer evenly across a much larger area underneath the tree. An 8-3-9 fertilizer works best for most fruit trees, while a palm special is best for most ornamentals.
