Broccoli

Backyard broccoli
Backyard broccoli

What is it? A vegetable with a large, flowering head and stalk, all edible.
What it tastes like: To some, broccoli is bitter; to others, it’s a slightly peppery veggie with different textures.
When you can find it: Broccoli grows in South Florida in the winter and spring. How to use and store: Store unwashed in a bag in the fridge.
Cooking tips: Add fresh, young florets and sliced raw stalks to salads. Steam quickly with a lemon for an easy side dish. Roast, tossed with olive oil and seasonings. Peel and chop stalks, sautee and stir into rice or pasta. In any case, don’t overcook.
