Brussels sprouts

What is it? Miniature cabbages that grow on a stalk.
What it tastes like: Like cabbage, but sweeter and, when young, tender.
When you can find it: Brussels sprouts grow in winter and spring here. Sometimes you can find them on the stalk.
How to use and store: Refrigerate in a plastic container but plan on using them as soon as possible after buying – they don’t keep well.
Cooking tips: Toss with olive oil, seasonings and a little balsamic vinegar (add a spoonful of honey or maple syrup) and roast at 400 degrees for about 30 minutes. If you have very fresh, young Brussels sprouts, slice very thin and add to salad.
