February is Black History Month, featuring activities throughout the month. Here are some of them:

Teach The Truth Garden Wellness Series

WHAT: The Teach the Truth Community Garden is being built by Dr. Marvin Dunn and the Miami Center for Racial Justice in the Historic Overtown neighborhood. Fresh vegetables and harvest will be delivered to residents in need. There will also be a distribution of books that exemplify black history. For the opening, Dr. Marvin Dunn will share his passion for Teaching the Truth and why it is necessary at this time, and his vision and inspiration for the community garden and MCRJ. Other event highlights include a guided community meditation by Shanté Haymore Kearney, Founder of Brown Goddess Collective and 4th generation Miami native. Dr. Dunn will also lead a historic walking tour through Overtown learning about the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Dorsey House, Ward Room, Lyric Theatre, and Mt. Bethel Church.

Black History Celebration in the Park, Homestead

WHAT: An evening filled with vibrant activities and entertainment with activities for everyone:
• Culinary delights: Local food trucks offering diverse flavors
• Fun and games: Entertaining games, trivia and karaoke for a night of laughter and enjoyment
• Family-friendly zone: Specially curated kids' activities, ensuring a memorable experience for the whole family
• Gaming area: Space for both enthusiasts and casual players
• Vendor showcase: Unique products and services
• Signature drinks: Refresh with specially crafted signature drinks, adding a touch of uniqueness to the celebration

Soul Vegan Festival, Miami Beach

WHAT: The Hungry Black Man Media and the City of Miami Beach present the 8th Annual Soul Vegan Festival, the nation’s foremost urban centric plant-based food, spirit and wellness festival in celebration of Black History Month. An extended weekend where vegan foodies, celebrities, and tourists gather on the sands of Miami Beach in celebration of Black History Month through the lens of food, drink, health, sustainability and fun.

Community Food Distribution in Fort Lauderdale

WHAT: Free community food distribution drive-though. First come, first served.

Echoes of Overtown: A Legacy Preserved

WHAT: Interactive exhibit at MiamiCentral serving as a tribute to the vibrant Overtown community, celebrating its rich history and cultural heritage. Guests will scan QR codes that will direct them to further information about the landmarks including Clyde Killens Pool Hall, the Historic D.A. Dorsey House, the Historic Lyric Theater and the Ward Rooming House.

16th Annual Black Excellence Parade & Festival

WHAT: Black History Month parade and festival starts at Boyd H. Anderson High School and ends at Vincent Torres Park.

Sistrunk Parade and Festival, Fort Lauderdale

WHAT: ROTC, steppers stepping, drill teams twirling, and decorated floats represents the richness of Broward's multi-cultural flavors. The street festival, hosted by the Sistrunk Historical Organization and the City of Fort Lauderdale, features national and local artists on the main stage and local talent on the community stage.

Black History Month Cooking Class, Coconut Grove

WHAT: Celebrate Black life, history and culture in this hands-on  culinary workshop presented by Black Girls Cook. Learn how to make rotisserie chicken and watermelon salad while exploring the invaluable contributions of the Black community to the world of food.

Red Rooster Overtown 

WHAT: Housed in the former Clyde Killen’s Pool Hall' in Overtown, a notable hot spot in the 1960s, and a historic site known to host icons such as Muhammed Ali, Aretha Franklin, and Count Basie, Red Rooster is offering special additions alongside their a la carte menu throughout February. Each week Red Rooster will craft two new specials highlighting the different traditions and flavors from West and Central Africa, The Caribbean, New Orleans, and South Carolina/Georgia low country.
