Hurricane Milton: The Waffle House Index

Waffle House Index for Tampa, Sun., Oct. 13
Waffle House Index for Tampa, Sun., Oct. 13

As Florida recovers from the effects of Hurricane Milton, we turn to the latest Waffle House Index, one of the non-meteorological gauges used in storms is the Waffle House Index. Note that some locations in the hardest-hit parts of the state – the Tampa Bay area and Orlando – are tagged yellow, indicating that they are open for limited service.

Waffle Houses are popular 24-hour, sit-down restaurants, now in 25 states, that issue maps showing which restaurants are open or closed in the wake of a disaster. Typically, they aim to be up and running as soon as possible, serving up scrambled eggs, biscuits, pancakes and other hot meals to hungry folks dealing with the issues of a storm’s aftermath.
