Craving Cookie Monster Pie, Red Velvet Cake or savory Chicken Pot Pies? There will be more room to ogle and order Fireman Derek’s pies and pastries in Wynwood. Local baker Derek Kaplan has outgrown his cozy original space and is opening a new shop a few blocks south on North Miami.

The new 25-seat bake shop at 2545 North Miami Avenue is triple the size of the current shop. Here, brownies, cookies and other items will be baked onsite with pies and cakes made daily at Kaplan’s Little Haiti bakery.

“This relocation was long overdue,” he says. “We’ve grown exponentially since we opened our tiny shop in 2014 and desperately needed the additional square footage.

At the new Wynwood shop, cakes, pies and savory items will have their own separate display cases. Kaplan will also offer his own line of hand-churned ice cream, which has been available at his Coconut Grove shop since last fall, shortly after the former Miami-Dade firefighter graduated from Penn State University’s Ice Cream School.

Kaplan envisions future expansion in South Florida. ”Broward and Palm Beach County have a number of neighborhoods that would be perfect for future stores,” he says.

The new Fireman Derek’s opens Sat., May 15; the original location’s last day is Tue., May 11.
