From Fisherman to the Fridge at Shore to Door
Inside a narrow storefront on Douglas Road just off Grand in Coconut Grove, Indira Funes and Sig Ozols sell fresh seafood plus local products like homemade mango chutney and hot sauce.
The catch of the day, on ice in display cases, might be local mutton snapper, mahi-mahi or Key West shrimp.
Before they opened Shore to Door, Funes was a longtime bartender at Scotty’s Landing. Ozols is Captain Sig of the deep-sea charter boat Hot Shot, taking anglers on sportfishing excursions to go after billfish, dorado, mahi-mahi, snapper, jacks and other fish.
“We opened in October of 2016 and were very well received by the community and it really is all word of mouth,” Funes says.
The week begins when Funes checks in with the 15 fishermen from Key West to Boynton Beach who supply them with fresh seafood. “I ask them what they’ll be fishing that week and to call me back to report what they’ve caught,” Funes says. This helps them plan their week for their regular customers, primarily from Coconut Grove, South Miami, Coral Gables, Key Biscayne and Brickell. She also delivers fresh seafood.
They take the seasonality of the fish very seriously here. They’ll only sell and serve what their fishermen are catching that week. In the summer months, shop hours vary depending on what’s available; when stone crab season rolls around in October, they’re especially busy. Out back, there’s a patio with picnic tables where they host weekend get-togethers and sell fresh whole fried yellowtail snapper. It’s a convivial, laid-back Grove-y setting that feels like a party with friends.
“This business was created by friends and family, people I listened to and were there to see this become a reality,” says Funes. “We’re bringing back the old-fashioned fish market.”
