What are they? Root vegetables that can be white or purple, with edible greens.
What they taste like: Mild to sharp depending on their variety and age.
When you can find them: Turnips grow in South Florida in the winter and spring.
How to use and store: If they have greens, cut them off, refrigerate and use within a few days. The roots keep in the refrigerator up to two weeks.
Cooking tips: Steam or parboil greens before adding to stir-fries. Shred peeled young raw turnip in salads. Cube peeled turnips and add to potatoes to mash. Steam turnip slices and serve with olive oil and herbs.
