Longtime Miami farmers market fish vendor Greg Maxwell has died. Known for his smoked fish dip and smoked fish chunks, stone crab claws and other seafood products, Captain Greg, as he was known to customers and vendors alike, is remembered as a man who was kind to all.

Urban Oasis Project’s Art Friedrich says Greg was “a kind and accepting man to everyone and certainly to our queer and trans community. He loved to share bits of his own Aussie culture and genuinely connect with people.” His booth was typically set up across from the Urban Oasis Booth at the Legion Park farmers market, where he would “power through the mornings to get setup and then make us a little snack to eat while we worked.”

“I love Captain Greg like my family,” recalls Corinne Mariposa of Miami Seed Share and Urban Oasis Project. “[We] lost an incredible human force of goodness.”

Laurie Landgrebe of Laurie’s Pantry and Farmers Markets to Go called Maxwell a “dear, the nicest guy ever. It’s a very big loss to the artisan markets,” she says. Her online store, farmersmarketstogo.com, will continue selling his products.

Maxwell is survived by his wife, Angela, and son Jason. Urban Oasis Project is setting up a memorial for him at the Legion Park market o Sat., April 3, across from their booth where he often set up.
