Local human rights organization WeCount!, in partnership with Working Films and the University of Miami Department of Journalism, invite the community to a free screening of Without Shade, Without Rest, a new documentary produced by Six Eye Films, an independent nonprofit based in South Florida.
The film examines the ongoing fight to win lifesaving heat protections led by outdoor workers in Florida in the wake of the hottest year on record, following two frontline organizations, the Coalition of Immokalee Workers and WeCount!, as they organize to secure lasting protections for outdoor laborers.
The screening will take place Nov. 10 from 6-7:45pm at The Bill Cosford Cinema at The University of Miami.
Since 2011, the Coalition of Immokalee Workers has built heat standards into its Fair Food Program through the Worker-driven Social Responsibility (WSR) model. Now, as lawmakers block new regulations, WeCount! worker leaders are organizing to expand the WSR approach to win enforceable protections across the state’s plant nurseries, through their new groundbreaking initiative Planting Justice. Without Shade Without Rest captures this pivotal turning point in the fight to protect outdoor workers as extreme heat intensifies.
