17000 Flavors of Indonesia
The offerings: Spice blends Bumbu Kuning, Merah, Putih and Samawa ($13 except for Merah, which is $15)
The story: “Most of my seasonings are the story of my life and all the tastes are memories of when I was a kid,” says Abe Moiz, co-founder of 17000 Flavors of Indonesia, a name inspired by the number of islands in Indonesia. “When I was a child in Indonesia, I sold yellow rice that included the Bumbu Kuning seasonings.” These include citrusy kaffir lime, nutty candlenut, garlic, ginger, galangal, lemongrass and turmeric. Abe and co-founder John Anthony also own Krakatoa Indonesian Restaurant in Hollywood.
How to use: Bumbu Kuning is good with chicken, fish, rice with coconut milk, and vegetables like eggplant and zucchini while Bumbu Merah is ideal for red meats, lamb or grilled seafood with tofu and tempeh.
Where to buy: At Krakatoa Indonesian Restaurant in Hollywood and Mima Market in Miami Shores, on Etsy and Amazon.
