Abuela Mami

Why We Love It: If you’re in Belfry, Montana, longing for galletas Maria and Chifles, Abuela Mami will ease the longing. These care packages are a subscription service featuring hand-picked Cuban culture goodies delivered to your door. Kiki Valdes, 36, and his brother remembered how their mother would send them Cuban treats when they went away to college. Today, she works for their two-year-old business, shipping monthly boxes with coffee and coffee makers, guava paste, flan mix, mojo, mugs and meringues. “It’s our culture,” says Valdes, who enjoys showcasing smaller local brands like Mama’s Guava bars, current one of the most popular items. Their boxes, now featured on Walmart online, get a regular boost from actress Jenny Lorenzo, who hilariously celebrates Cuban families through her memorable abuela character. Lorenzo regularly creates “unboxing” videos from the latest deliveries and posts them at facebook.com/JennyLorenzoFAN.
