Burr’s Berry Farm

Burr’s Berry Farm
Burr’s Berry Farm

OPEN: Seasonally
U-PICK: Tomatoes, strawberries, sunflowers, bell peppers, snapdragons, herbs, lettuce
THE STORY: For more than 60 years, this farm has been the friendly face of all things strawberry. Charles Raymond Burr, part of the pioneer Burr family, planted his first crop of strawberries in 1960. Visitors flocked to his berry stand, where he also sold strawberry ice cream and milkshakes. Burr died in 2001, but his stand – selling berries, local produce, homemade jellies and jams – continues to draw visitors during the winter growing season. Recent innovations include festivals – a Strawberry Festival, a Harvest Festival in the fall, a Christmas festival over the holidays, all combining agricultural family activities with Instagram-worthy photo opportunities, especially in the sunflower fields. The stand also sells milkshakes, hot dogs, juices, baked goods and fresh produce.

Changes are in the works for the fall 2020 harvest season. Karl Wiegandt, who has operated Burr’s for the past seven years, is moving to a 30-acre site just southwest of the present farm, at SW 218 St. and 137 Ave. “Same operators, but more things to do, a new facility, more parking,” says Wiegandt, who also operates Strawberry Friends of Kendall. They’ll offer field trips, seasonal hay and corn mazes and pumpkin patches, and lots and lots of sunflowers.
