THE STORY: Broward and North Miami-Dade residents no longer have to drive to Homestead to pick their own produce, thanks to this property on the border of Davie and Sunrise. Robert Hoover, who has grown tropical fruits on the property for the past 20 years, decided to partner with family members to create a u-pick and farm event space for birthday parties and other events. There’s a produce stand, farm animals, shakes and juice for sale, plus regular artisan markets, bonfires, pumpkin patches and seasonal festivals. They hope to add sunflowers and other cut flowers to the property. “We’re trying to create a family atmosphere here,” says Hoover, and so far the response has been positive. “The community has embraced us.”
