Papaya

Papaya

Papaya (Carica papaya) may look like it grows on a tree, but it’s actually an herb. Similar to melons, papaya can be small as squash or larger – up to 2-3 pounds – with orange flesh that is sweet and aromatic, filled with edible black peppery seeds. Unripe papayas are popular in Asian dishes, such as green papaya salad, while ripe fruits can be enjoyed in salads, smoothies, preserves and quick breads. Cut in half and eat with a spoon, or peel and cut into chunks. Freeze ripe fruit to add to smoothies.
