Holy Lamb Organics new at SEB Mattress
Coconut Grove's SEB Mattress is a favorite with customers, who give the family-owned business five-star reviews on Yelp and Google for their personalized service, top quality organic mattresses made without toxic chemicals, and cotton bedding.
“We care about what we put inside our bodies. But what about the outside?” asks Sebastian Jimenez of SEB Mattress.
To answer that question, SEB – Sleep Even Better – carries certified organic mattresses and bedding made with cotton, wool and latex to provide a nontoxic, healthy sleep environment without harmful chemicals or potential allergens.
Sebastian, who lives in the Grove with his wife, Ivette Font, and infant daughter, says one of the reasons they opened SEB Mattress is because people are unaware about how many bad chemicals are in mattresses.
“They shouldn’t have formaldehyde, VOCs (volatile organic compounds), anything made of petroleum,” says Sebastian. “We offer organic mattresses made with quality materials – cotton, wool, certified organic latex – for everyone in the family: babies, kids, adults, pets. We also have bedsheets made from organic cotton with no dyes, mattress protectors, pillows and pet beds.” Customers include people with mold allergies, skin rashes and respiratory issues, as well as people looking for orthopedic mattresses and – of course – anyone in search of a comfortable and safe night’s sleep.
Family-owned Business
Originally from Chile, Sebastian’s family came to the United States when he was a toddler. Sebastian, who went to Coral Gables Senior High and FIU, started his career in banking before teaming up with his father, who had been in the mattress business for 15 years. They opened SEB Mattress at the Florida Keys Outlet Center in Florida City in 2014, and in fall 2015 he and his wife debuted their boutique in Coconut Grove. This light-filled, airy location at the corner of Grand and Douglas, in the up-and-coming West Grove area, is a tranquil setting where customers can explore different mattresses and get expert advice in a low-key, friendly atmosphere.
Quality Organic Brands
One of the brands SEB carries is Naturepedic, whose certified organic products are handmade by Amish craftspeople in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, following strict environmental and labor standards. The company was launched in 2003 after its founder could not find a crib mattress for his grandchild that was made without using questionable chemicals, potential allergens or hazardous flame retardants. Naturepedic also makes pillows made with non-GMO plant-based PLA batting, kapok, organic latex and cotton; and a Baby Collection that uses the highest quality organic cotton fabric and filling to ensure a healthy and nontoxic sleep environment without the use of flame retardant chemicals.
SEB Mattress also carries mattresses from Magniflex, an Italian company that has been creating quality products for the past 50 years. Certifications include OEKO TEX®, which ensures their products are free from substances that are toxic or harmful to humans or the environment and GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), which certifies that all fabrics used in their Toscana collection are made with 100 percent organic materials.
And they now offer 100 percent certified organic latex mattresses made by Soaring Heart in Seattle; Alterra Pure organic bed sheets and duvet covers; pet bumper beds made by West Paw Design; and Oeko-Tek Standard 100 certified travel pillows made by B-Sensible from Barcelona. Buying a Mattress
When you walk into the Coconut Grove boutique, you’ll notice a relaxing, light-filled showroom without harsh chemical odors found in some mattress stores. There’s no hard sell or high-pressure atmosphere, says Sebastian. Here, you’re encouraged to try out mattresses to find the one that’s right for you: “Put yourself in the position you sleep in,” he says. Mattresses are available in soft, medium and firm and are customizable. You may discover you prefer foam, or individually wrapped coils, he says, “so if you get up, the person next to you doesn’t feel it.” SEB also sells adjustable electric bases to use with orthopedic mattresses for people with neck and back injuries, sleep apnea, acid reflux, poor circulation and other health issues.
SEB offers white-glove service, free local delivery and local perks like Panther Coffee gift cards and essential oils, making every customer feel like a VIP. Mattresses carry a 20-year warranty. And best of all, says Sebastian, they’ll get a product that will help support a key component of a healthy lifestyle: good sleep.
