Your Local Holiday Gift Guide 2018
It’s easy to support local businesses! Visit South Florida farmers markets, independent retailers and their online businesses. Here are some good local gift ideas for all price ranges. Some of them are our advertisers; others are artisans we’ve written about; and still others are products or services we’re familiar with. Whatever you choose, your recipients will appreciate your thoughtfulness, and so will these community vendors.
Food and Drink
COFFEE: From the folks who brought you Abuela Mami gift boxes of Cuban treats comes Abuela Mami Coffee, whole beans that you can grind for cafecitos made in the cafetera or drip style a lo americano. It’s certified organic with adorable retro packaging It’s only available online.
TEA: Mike Ortiz and Tico Aran's JoJoTea – plus teaware – is a thoughtful gift. Find JoJo Tea and teaware online or at select retailers. And what about a guided tea tasting gift certificate ($35pp)? Pair with Grate Madeleine’s handcrafted madeleines ($5 delivery charge for Miami and Broward for the holidays) or find at select retailers, including Milam's Markets.

WINE, BEER AND SPIRITS: Our wine writer, Jeffrey Wolfe, astounds us with his depth of knowledge about wines and the foods they go with, so you'll be in good hands. Bonus reason to visit Wolfe’s Wine Shoppe in Coral Gables – his two golden retrievers, Magnum and Jeroboam. In Homestead, Schnebly Redland’s Wine and Brewery uses local fruits in many of their products, including lychee, guava and avocado. Key West's First Legal Rum Distillery sells rums aged in salt-cured barrels, plus other rum-flavored swag and foods, like rum cakes and rum balls.

Along with that citrus, you can send relatives dragonfruit, avocado and other tropical treats. Robert Is Here in Homestead has been shipping fruit for years. Order online, but if you visit their Florida City shop, you can treat yourself to a key lime shake. (And listen to Robert talk about unusual fruits on our Tastes of the Tropics podcast.) New on the scene is Taste of Redland, shipping seasonal and always local produce, including Persian limes, starfruit, avocado, dragonfruit, guava, sapodilla and honey, throughout Florida for a fixed price.
