The glorious Delonix regia – the royal poinciana, aka flamboyant – is usually in full bloom every June, where it’s the subject of celebration in the long-running Royal Poinciana Fiesta. This year’s event from the Tropical Flowering Tree Society features a full slate of activities, many free of charge.
Walking Tour of Jean Willis Park
WHAT: Explore Jean Willis Park, the county’s first flowering tree park, planted by the Tropical Flowering Tree Society in 1992, with a supplemental planting in 2014. Led by Steve Pearson, the tour features yellow and orange flowering poincianas and other tropical flowering trees.

WHERE: 7220 SW 61 Court, South Miami. This part of SW 61 Court can only be reached from SW 72 Street (Sunset Dr.) The Park is just west of the city hall, and police station. Since the tour is not during business hours, guests can park free in the city parking in the spaces facing SW 72 Street or other spaces in the lot unless they are not reserved for employees or city officials.
Royal Poinciana Fiesta Celebration Party and Reception
WHAT: Trolley tours of Fairchild, refreshments including Royal Poinciana Punch and cake, presentations for the Royal Poinciana Fiesta Queen and Court scholarship and the Larry Schokman Book Award recipient are all on the agenda. There will be a special display of works by renowned works collected by Mark Lerner, also known as the Highwaymen Collector. Limited edition Royal Poinciana Fiesta posters will be available for sale.

Yoga at the Kampong
WHAT: 60-minute yoga class combines movement, relaxation and meditation. Kampong yoga classes are calming flow practices that link basic yoga postures in a purposeful sequence, incorporating traditional sun salutations and balance poses. Vinyasa style classes link movement with breath. This class is perfect for yoga beginners, but works equally well for anyone looking for a gentle alternative to a stronger vinyasa flow class. Afterwards we will bathe in the majesty and shade of Miami’s oldest Royal Poinciana planted by David Fairchild himself. Bring your own yoga mat, water bottle and insect repellent (if needed). Poinciana Trolley Tours
WHAT: The Royal Poinciana Trolley Tours begin at the Coral Gables Library, highlighting the best trees and blossoms of the 2024 season. Narrated by two poinciana experts and past presidents of the Tropical Flowering Tree Society. Book now since these sell out early.
