Cultivating Culture

Missing South Florida’s nonstop stream of events and festivals during the coronavirus closings? You’re invited to Cultivating Culture on Sat., May 9, an online gathering of local food artisans and gardeners hosting demos and presentations all day via Instagram Live.

The idea came from last month’s Florida Ferment Fest, an annual event that went online when events were shut down, says Tico Aran of Radiate Kombucha. “They did a really good job,” with the ferment fest, which featured demos all day on making mead, shrubs, sourdough, tempeh, miso and other foods,” he says. “We watched four sessions, and it was easy to pop in for half an hour.” He and his daughter made a shrub with blackberries and mango.

Aran decided to follow a similar format featuring artisans to bring together the community during these hard times and shine a light on our seasonality. “I know how we’re doing,” he says. “There’s a lot of down time.” The programming also focuses on activities homebound people are interested in, like backyard gardening and baking.

Cultivating Culture, which runs from 10:30am through 5:30pm, is a series of half-hour presentations by artisans. Guests visit each of their Instagram accounts for their designated time slot. Miss one? No problem – presentations will be available to see for 24 hours.
