South Florida is celebrating Juneteenth with special dinners, arts presentations, and lots more. This federal holiday commemmorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans on June 19, the anniversary of the order issued by Major General Gordon Granger proclaiming freedom for slaves in Texas.

WHAT: Richmond Heights grew after World War II as a neighborhood for African American veterans seeking affordable housing. Fourth Annual Juneteenth for Joy Festival, Dania Beach

WHAT: Day 1 features Dwell: Art for a Black Utopia at the 1310 Gallery. Day 2 brings the stories of eight historic Black communities in Broward County: Carver Ranches, Pompano Beach, Liberia, Lauderhill/Oakland Park (Harlem-McBride), Sistrunk, Miramar, NW Hallandale and Deerfield Beach. Juneteenth Park-In and Party Experience in the Gardens

WHAT: Third annual Juneteenth Park-In and Party Celebration. Family West African Dance and Drum Class, Miami Gardens

WHAT: Juneteenth edition of the three-part series called Arts & Culture in the Gardens. The series highlights traditional African arts to highlight Black culture, ancient folklore and customs passed down through generations. Connect with dancers, drummers and art lovers, and take a class taught by professional artists for an evening filled with Black creativity.

Red Rooster Overtown

WHAT: Red Rooster Overtown invites the community to their backyard to enjoy lawn games, food and drinks. A special food truck will be on site offering plates at $20/pp featuring a choice of main and two sides: Chicken Thigh, Pulled Pork or Vegetarian with sides including mac & cheese, collard greens and cornbread. A mobile bar will serve specialty cocktails featuring black-owned Uncle Nearest Whiskey. The Poetry Potluck: Recognizing Juneteenth

WHAT: The Poetry Potluck is a living activation and a Gathering for the Art of Community. The Family Room is meant to activate the child in us. This space is meant for exploration, learning, discovery, free thought and open dialogue. It is a theater, an art gallery, and even a museum at times. And we don’t put plastic on anything here. The Backyard: This space is meant to mimic the traditional Black family cookout. There are blankets laid out and games on the lawn. Someone is mixing drinks and people are playing cards. This is where we break bread at the Family Table. This is where the Creatives take the stage.

WHAT: This free event is open to the entire community and will feature musical performances, local artisan vendors, activities, dancers, food trucks, raffles, and fun for the whole family. Lawn chairs and mats are welcome at the Earlene and Albert Dotson Pavilion Lawn (MARC building at MMC). Stop by the Bacardi Lounge (guests over 21 only) at the Frost Museum during their Summer Exhibition Party to cool off, open from 1-5pm. Registration is required. The first 200 faculty/staff and the first 200 students to register will receive a $15 food voucher to use any of the event’s food trucks.
