Cooks Needed in Farm-to-Table Foodservice

Finding kitchen help is a major problem in South Florida and elsewhere as restaurants emerge from pandemic mode. Thousand-dollar signing bonuses and salary boosts for cooks and chefs are among the incentives restaurateurs are offering to attract workers.

At Homestead Hospital, executive chef manager Drew Thomason is looking for cooks, too. Their hook? Comprehensive benefits, security and work-life balance rarely seen in restaurant positions, but also a chance to work in a true farm-to-table environment.

Chefs are connected to Homestead Hospital’s Grow2Heal garden, where they grow fresh, healthy produce to use in meals for patients and at the cafeteria. “I just harvested fresh herbs – chives, rosemary, purple basil and parsley – for them to use to enhance meals,” says Thi Squire, Grow2Heal garden manager. “This is a unique opportunity for chefs in foodservice.”
