Here’s the kind of story we’re happy to report: planting a mango tree and doing limited-edition croughnuts!

At the recently opened Tigertail + Mary in Coconut Grove, chef Michael Schwartz will be planting a Carrie tree on the front lawn. He says he selected Carrie because it’s a variety he’s enjoyed from his own yard.

“It’s a great fruiter and so cool we get to have our own front lawn tree and use its harvest in coming seasons,” he says. “The Carrie is just so good, and not really so known. It has a creamy, fiber-free texture and coconutty flavor and balanced sweetness with just the right amount of tang. Not just good eating on its own, but great for building a dish around… not just dessert!”

To celebrate, Schwartz has collaborated with The Salty Donut to create a special mango + coconut croughnut: a 24-hour brioche, dusted in pineapple-kaffir lime sugar, filled with mango custard and topped with dollops of coconut cream and salty coconut streusel. The special donut will debut at the new Tigertail + Mary Cafe starting Friday, July 12, and will be available until sold out at both the Cafe and The Salty Donut in Wynwood and South Miami until Sunday, July 21.

Also available during the debut weekend: free special-edition mango temporary tattoos from local illustrator Pooka from Ocho Placas, whose Bidens alba tattoo was featured in our spring 2018 issue.
