Donations are needed for Caribbean islands hard-hit by Hurricane Beryl

The earliest Category 5 hurricane on record for the Atlantic Basin, Beryl packed 165-mph winds as it made its way through the eastern Caribbean, bringing life-threatening conditions to Antigua, Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The storm brushed by Jamaica, damaging roofs and power lines.

Local relief efforts are underway. Here are some that can use your donations, your money or your time.

Miami-Dade

Miami-Dade County and Global Empowerment Mission (GEM) are collecting nonperishable foods and supplies at the following drop-off locations.

    •    Global Empowerment Mission HQ, 1850 NW 84th Ave, Doral
    •    North Dade Regional Library, 2455 NW 183rd St, Miami Gardens
    •    South Dade Regional Library, 10750 SW 211 St, Cutler Bay
    •    Aventura Library, 2930 NE 199th St, Aventura
    •    Stephen P. Clark Center, 111 NW 1st St, Miami

Libraries are closed on Sundays. The GEM warehouse is open for donations from Mon.-Fri. 10am-5pm.

In addition to canned/nonperishable foods with a 1+-year expiration date, here’s what else they need:

•   trash bags
•    tarps and tents
•    sleeping bags
•    work gloves
•    solar-powered lights
•    industrial sponges
•    first aid kits
•    hygiene kits (hairbrush, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, soap, washcloths, deodorant)
•    generators*
•    cots
•    sheets and blankets
*Generators can only be accepted at the Global Empowerment Mission HQ.
You can also purchase and deliver emergency supplies directly to the GEM Warehouse via Amazon.
