This November, it’s the perfect time to celebrate Miami-Dade’s vibrant farming community in Miami-Dade. Check out these places to explore our agricultural district during the growing season and year-round.

Take a Leisurely Drive on Krome Avenue

This 32-mile tour takes you past scores of nurseries, farm experiences, food stands, taco trucks and – yes – fields of crops. The highway was named for William Krome, chief construction engineer of the Florida East Coast Railway and part of a family that played a big role in developing the avocado, lime and mango industry. Head south on Krome Ave. (SW 177 Ave.) from Kendall Drive. Along the way: Tinez Farms, a family-owned farm with seasonal activities; the farm stand of longtime multigenerational family farmer Sam Accursio. Royd’s, a new Western-themed attraction and FarmHouse Miami, a restaurant and family-friendly things to do. Heritage Market is a restaurant, market and site of a hydroponic greenhouse and fields. Krome takes you through the Homestead Historic Downtown District, home to the restored 1921 Seminole Theater, the Historic Homestead Town Hall Museum, antique shops and restaurants.

Stock up on Orchids and Plants

Pick up beautiful orchids, fruit trees and landscape plants for your home garden in the Redland, where 1,500 nurseries grow bedding plants, palms, shrubs, tropical foliage and other plants. Every October, the annual Redland International Orchid Festival is held at Fruit and Spice Park.

Visit Farm Stands and Farms

Time for family fun on the farm! See (and buy) what’s growing. Others feature petting zoos, kids’ activities, cafes and food trucks, milkshakes made with tropical fruits. Robert Is Here offers the quintessential farm experience: old farm equipment, a petting zoo, produce, fruit milkshakes and lunch, and the founder himself to answer your questions about tropical fruits. One of the best-known seasonal farm stands, Knaus Berry Farm sells cinnamon buns and baked goods, strawberry shakes and local produce, through April. Nearby, Fruit and Spice Park is a unique county park where you can learn about and try tropical fruits and spices. Other farm experiences include The Little Farm, Pinto’s Farm and The Berry Farm, home to a seasonal corn maze, hay rides, sunflower fields and a farm stand. Redland Ranch serves smoothies and food truck lunch and sells honey, jelly and local foods. Farm experiences are typically open on weekends and holidays but check first.

Meet the Farmers

Tour area farms, learn about the crops they grow, and buy fresh-from-the-farm produce. Most are by appointment only. At AgriTrace Institute, French Farms grows produce and Little River Cooperative is a nursery for edible plants. They host regular sales, volunteer days, workshops and other events. Aloha Redland offers farm tours of their permaculture garden and events during the year. Empower Farms, a certified organic farm that uses permaculture practices for people with disabilities, offers tours. Serendib Farms, specializing in tropical fruits, gives tours with reservations. Paradise Farms, a longtime local regenerative and organic farm growing mushrooms, edible flowers, greens and fruits, offers seasonal tours. Well-known farm. Teena’s Pride opens its farm to guests on weekends during growing season for freshly harvested tomatoes, vegetables and herbs.
