Juneteenth in South Florida 2021
It's official! President Biden has signed legislation making Juneteenth – June 19th – a federal holiday. The law, which goes into effect immediately, means Friday becomes the first federal Juneteenth holiday in U.S. history (June 19 falls on a Saturday this year).
Also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day and Emancipation Day, this holiday commemorates the historical moment when news of emancipation was first proclaimed to enslaved Texans by the Union Army.
Throughout South Florida, there's a host of special events – music, food, webinars, tree giveaways, brunch, even a planting day:
Know Your Black Texas History: Juneteenth
WHAT: This online webinar from the James Beard Foundation features a cooking demo by Joi Chevalier, The Cook’s Nook, Austin;. Hungry Black Man Annual Juneteenth Food & Music Celebration, Overtown
WHAT: Weekend of fun: Miami’s underground R&B music scene’s musicians and vocal artists joins Black chefs and mixologists for a commemorative celebration through food and music, featuring chef-inspired vegan and non-vegan bites paired with Bacardi inspired craft cocktails. Enjoy plant-based and non-vegan foods – low country, BBQ, soul food, Creole and Midwestern – and a hydration station with natural drinks, fruit juices and infused waters. Live music and DJ provide a mashup of soul and rap, jazz house, blues and metal, will take listeners through a journey of Black American musical excellence.

Juneteenth Caribbean Carnival Experience, Key West
WHAT: Costumed parade through the streets of Old Town. Saturday’s festivities will all happen at the Coffee Butler Amphitheater at the Waterfront. All day tickets are $20 each and you can come and go. Parade participants, with their costumes, come in free. For costume availability, please call 305-304-1142 prior to the event. Saturday morning, June 19th, at 7:00 am, Jouvert begins. Wake to the sweet sounds of the ocean breeze at the Coffee Butler Amphitheater. J’ouvert costumes will be available for $25. There you will find Junkanoo bands and percussion bands while you enjoy breakfast from the different Caribbean Islands. Vendors in our Caribbean Food Court will be serving vegetarian, natural foods and meat lovers’ delights.
