Service Opportunities, Upper Keys

WHAT: Various organizations will hold a day of community service in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and legacy. The day will include a ribbon-cutting and dedication of a Little Community Library. Attendees may bring a book to donate and help stock the library. A cleanup on U.S. 1 gives residents the chance to join Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies. The cleanup will take place on the north and south sides of Friendship Park. Participants should bring work gloves and a water bottle and wear a hat, sunscreen and comfortable clothes for outdoor activities.

WHAT: Enjoy the exclusive King’s Jambalaya Dinner Special, a feast featuring BBQ fried chicken, jollof rice, fish curry, collards, cornbread, and peanut chimichurri ($110 per guest). The celebration continues through the weekend with the King Brunch Grand Buffet on Sat.-Sun., Jan. 19. The buffet includes a raw bar featuring oysters on the half shell, island conch ceviche, and shrimp cocktail, smaller plates like cornbread, deviled eggs, sweet potato hummus, and fried yardbird and waffles; fresh salads such as the African goddess and Rooster caesar; entrees such as flat iron steak + eggs, shrimp and grits, Cuban sandwich, catch of the day, smoked brisket hash, avocado toast, PB&J French toast and scrambled Eggs and indulgent desserts like seasonal cobbler, key lime tart, mud pie and pecan tart.
