On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we honor the birthday of the civil rights movement leader with a day of service and celebration. Here are some ways to honor his memory:

United Way Miami Days of Service

WHAT: United Way Miami is inviting volunteers to build kits from the comforts of their homes. Collect supplies, gather a team of friends and family, and assemble memory enrichment kits and/or weekend snack packs that will benefit Easterseals South Florida's children, older adults, and their families.
WHEN AND WHERE: Completed kits can be dropped off at United Way Miami via drive-through. Available drop-off times: Fri., Jan. 21, 11am-1pm and Fri., Jan. 28, 11am-1pm

5K Run and Fitness Walk, Liberty City

WHAT: Runners should arrive for registration between 6:30 and 7:45am

Liberty City’s 45th Annual MLK Parade

WHAT: The oldest and largest celebration in the U.S. takes place along eight miles that Dr. King once traveled during his frequent engagements in Miami.
WHEN AND WHERE: Begins at 11am, starting from NW 54th St. and 10th Ave. to 32 Ave.

Liberty City’s Family Festival

WHAT: Cultural programs, entertainment, performances and culinary experiences designed to honor, promote, unify and preserve South Florida’s vibrant African and Caribbean heritage. Try African falafel fritters, Brazilian espetinhos; African American barbecue; Trinidadian doubles and roti; Jamaican patties, jerk ribs and chicken; Cuban arepas; Bahamian conch fritters; Haitian griot; Mexican tamales; Dominican empanadas; fried plantains, boiled peanuts, roasted corn and coconut water.

WHAT: A series of service projects benefiting local nonprofit agencies.
WHEN AND WHERE: Hunger (10am-11am): Animal Welfare (11am-noon); Teen Service Squad – Diversity in Art (1-2pm); Children’s Literary (2-3pm).

WHAT: The Unity March starts at Tamarac Park and ends at Tamarac City Hall. Entertainment and refreshments will be available after the Unity March at City Hall.

Heal the Planet Neighborhood Clean-Up, Fort Lauderdale

WHAT: On MLK Day, help honor Dr. King's legacy of civic engagement. Join with YMCA teams, Adopt-A-Street groups, and volunteers removing litter, reading to our children, and supporting healthy communities.
