Chef Jeremiah Bullfrog's latest food event, PopRamen, is a little different from his other events. PIG (Pork Is Good) celebrates dishes made from pork every November and Duck Duck Goose is all about poultry and foie. PopRamen challenges chefs to bring their best, creating a specific dish, ramen noodles, the Japanese dish made of Chinese noodles in a rich broth and add-ins of meats, vegetables, an egg and whatever the chef envisions.

In the highly structured world of Japanese cuisine, ramen noodle dishes are among the few that don't follow strict rules, says Jeremiah, opening the doors to creative interpretations. "The ramen battle lets us shine on who's doing great things here."

PopRamen, held Sept. 22 at the Palm Court in the Design District, brings together five chefs who will face off in the noodle competition:

Pablo Zitzmann – Alcalde
Andrew ZarzosaYuzu
Diego Ng & Alex KukTemple Street Eatery
Louis GraysonRamen Lab
Amy LubchanskyLan Ramen-Ya

Each participating chef creates a unique spin on Japan’s noodle bowl, whether hot or cold, wet or dry. "Judges will be looking for taste, orginality, execution," says Jeremiah. Judges include two guests and one local judge:

Katsuya Fukushima – Daikaya, Bantam King, Washington, DC
Justin Carlisle – Red Light Ramen, Milwaukee
Hiro Shigetomi – Yakko-san, Miami

The crowd will also cast votes for their favorite ramen. Everyone will be able to sample sake, Japanese beer, cocktails, and chef Brad Kilgore will host a yakitori bar.
