A Visit to the Lush Fruitful Field

When we last visited The Fruitful Field in Pompano Beach, both their community gardens and the crops they grow for their CSA were flourishing. And now? The seven-acre site is even more lush, with fresh, new raised bed gardens, a sturdy new nursery for seedlings, islands of fragrant lavender and rosemary, food-forest staples like bananas and pineapples, row crops of lettuce, kale and greens, sugar snap peas, to name just a few.

Garden manager Tracy Dillon gave us a tour of the property, pointing out some new features along the way.

Located behind the Parkway United Methodist Church in a tranquil green space in the community of Tedder, The Fruitful Field grows veggies for their CSA: tomato, pepper, eggplant, kales, cabbages, colorful swiss chards, broccolini, cauliflower, to name just a few. Volunteers and participants in their GrowCity Youth program tend to the crops.

Their CSA offers a dual benefit: subscribers, who purchase a Buy/Give Share, get a basked of freshly harvested produce each week, which in turn supports produce donations to local food pantries and soup kitchens

Also new at the garden: two murals, one at the former nursery and the other on the side of the church. Each shows different aspects of the garden.
