Historic Virginia Key Beach Park Eco-History Tours

WHAT: Take a free eco-history tour at the park, one of the few beaches open to Miami-s African American community during segregation, now a protected park on the National Register of Historic Places.

Oakland Park Soul Fest

Florida’s Underground Railroad: Southern Road to Freedom, Miami Shores

WHAT: A discussion with Magdalena Lamarre about enslaved Africans who sought to regain their freedom and fought to maintain it, establishing "free towns" in Florida when the territory was part of the Spanish empire. Escaping slavery using Florida's Underground Railroad, they lived free before the abolition of slavery in the United States.

Oak Grove Fest

WHAT: Caribbean culture is a part of Black history! This free event features musical artists curated by Miami Light Project in partnership with Community Arts and Culture, including Haitian singer Emeline Michel, Tabou Combo, Papaloko and Loray Mistik, Inez Barlatier, Cortadito and teh Spam Allstars and other guests, plus food trucks and other vendors.

Diversity of the African Diaspora, Brickell

WHAT: Take a walk down Black Music memory lane and listen to African-rooted music like R&B, jazz, funk, hip-hop, the blues and more, plus free passed hors d’oeuvre, a liquor tasting, live performances, poetry reading and more.

Black History Month with Derrick Turton at Smorgasburg Miami

WHAT: Miami’s largest outdoor-food market, will be partnering up with Derrick Turton from World Famous House of Mac to celebrate Black History Month. The weekend celebrations will honor Black History Month with a live Junkanoo parade, steel pan music and a stilt dancer by Island Groove Entertainment. Junkanoo performers decked in colorful costumes and masks will lead the parade with cow bells, whistles, drums and a horn player. Children will receive whistles and join the parade. There’ll be live performances by reggae artist Sherine Campbell and guitarist Kenzy Lafrance.Smorgasburg Miami will be decorated with flags and banners celebrating Black History Month. On the culinary side, Smorgasburg’s vendors and guest vendors will showcase special dishes that will only be available during this weekend celebration. Guest vendors include Island Cooking with Afrochef Lela with Caribbean Jerk Chicken, Wholly Smoke BBQ with Southern Smoked Brisket, Naomi’s Garden with her popular Jerk Chicken, Eat Inn Cheat with Healthy Soul Food, Kome Oyster and Sushi Bar with Fried Chicken and Waffles and World Famous House of Mac with of course, gourmet Jerk mac and cheese and more.

Black Art Celebration at The Underline, Miami

WHAT: A night of free music, poetry, and art in celebration of Black History Month sponsored by Bookleggers. Enjoy electronic music duo Paperwater @paperwater, poet Darius Daughtry @dariusdaughtry, designer Rebecca Lee of Blavk Jewelry @blavkjewelry, the Bookleggers mobile Bookbike sponsored by the Jorge M. Perez Family Foundation, and delicious local food and drinks from Naomi’s Garden. The event is free but registration is required. All ages are welcome! Health and Wellness Extravaganza, Miami

WHAT: Free food distribution, free health screenings, a dozen community partners including Eat Well Exchange, the Resource Room, Metro Mommy Agency, performances from DJ Big Will, musicians Frankie and Mikah and the Booker T. Washington Marching Band, capoeira, yoga and Zumba classes, a talk on food insecurity by Urban Oasis and a bounce house for the kids!
