DIscarded food amounts to up to 40 percent of food waste in the U.S.

What if you filled up 10 plates with delicious food – then threw away all the food on four of those plates? Forty percent of all food in the United States does not get eaten.

This week is the launch of the inaugural Food Waste Prevention Week, April 5-9, that aims to draw attention to food waste and inspire a call to action to address food waste in homes, workplaces and community.

    •    Up to 40% of all food waste occurs at the household level, while 1 in 5 Floridians are food insecure, lacking consistent access to nutritious food.
    •     Reducing food waste saves families money. A family of four can save on average $1,500 annually by taking steps to cut back on food waste.
    •     Greenhouse gas emissions from food decomposing in landfills is a major contributor to climate change. Additionally, reversing this trend provides an opportunity to conserve precious land, water, energy, and human resources.
