Cool RunningsWebsiteCool Runnings Organic Farm at a GlanceFarmer: Garfield Jarrett. Formerly Sol City run by Mat Santos and Andres Arce How they started: While studying at FIU, I came across a USDA-funded program called VeSFo (Veterans and Small Farmers Outreach Program), which was geared towards transitioning military veterans into farming. I was intrigued and began interning at several organic vegetable farms. In 2016, I was finally able to lease land and begin my farming venture. I realized that South Florida lacked in humane, ethical and clean animal husbandry. I studied Regenerative Agriculture pioneers such as Joel Salatin of Polyface Farms and Will Harris of White Oaks Pastures. Joel realized that with the proper management of animals, you could actually build soil, add fertility and create a carbon sink. Their philosophy: We believe in treating our land and animals with respect and we uphold ourselves to a high standard of ethics and quality. The work we put into this farm is an overflow of the passion that we have for clean food, a better environment, and healthier families. What they raise: Chicken, eggs, beef and pork. We raise a breed called Florida Cracker cattle. These cattle are descendants of the first Andalusian cattle that were brought to Florida by Ponce de Leon. We also have a partnership for raw milk and cheeses. About grass-fed beef and pasture-raised chickens: We rotationally graze our cattle using portable electric fencing and make sure they do not return to the same ground for at least 60 days, allowing the land to rest, recover and grow back even stronger. We never spray our pasture and don’t give our cattle antibiotics/hormones. Our grass-fed and finished heritage (criollo) beef has a clean beefy taste with no odors or aftertaste. Florida Cracker beef is naturally leaner than the commercial type Angus and Wagyu, but they make up for it in taste. Our chickens are truly pasture raised. Every chicken coop is mobile and on wheels. We move our chickens to the fresh pasture daily. How to buy beef shares: We sell beef in 1/8th shares. After we process an animal, we divide all the cuts into eight separate shares. A share of our heritage breed grass-fed beef is typically about 25 lbs. of assorted cuts such as steaks, roasts and ground beef. We weigh each share individually and charge a flat $/lb for each share. We currently have a pickup stand at our farm that is accessible 24/7. When you purchase online, you can choose a pickup option and we will send you a one-time code to pick up when you’d like. About their farm tours: We do private family farm tours in which families can hold the hens and even gather their own dozen eggs fresh from the coop to take home. We show them what a typical day of farm chores looks like and teach them where our food comes from. |

In meeting our goals toward sustainability, we have moved away from the use of commercial fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides. We are also setting up relationships with companies to reduce food waste that can be consumed by our animals rather than going to the trash. Our model is not fixed but changing as we try to serve the needs of the community as well as reduce out ecological impact on the environment. |

Criswell Farm and MarketWebsiteCriswell Farm and Market at a GlanceFarmers: Kevin Quigley and Judy Ozer There’s precious little farmland left even in the western reaches of Broward County, so it’s especially surprising to come across this not-quite-an-acre urban farm in the heart of downtown Fort Lauderdale, footsteps from Broward Boulevard and within earshot of the Brightline/Virgin Trains station. Criswell Farm & Market was started by Kevin Quigley, a Wall Street IT guy who fled Manhattan and learned to farm. Their employees include Judy Ozer. Volunteers help plant, weed and harvest. The farm is lush and well-tended – even in late spring, there were tomatoes still on the vines. Plans are underway to fix up a food truck onsite to serve as a kitchen for smoothies and other farm-to-table fare. Their philosophy Kevin: I was told I could make a ton of money! What I found was passion and community – money’s not important. I’m happy! I’ve never enjoyed my work more. Judy: When we grow, we get so excited. It’s so much fun, like having kids – it gives you a happy feeling. What they grow Produce and tropical fruits, grown organically in grow bags, including herbs, kale, mulberries, cranberry hibiscus, tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, Asian greens, tropical spinach. Fruit trees include mango and bananas. Their market also sells produce from other South Florida farms, and they carry raw honey, preserves, eggs, baked goods, soaps and dog biscuits, all made locally. Big plus: Some of the produce is harvested on the spot for customers so it’s perfectly fresh and unwilted. What’s next? Holding classes in growing produce, plus hosting special events, like dinners or parties. More info Criswell Farm & Market is located at 24 NW 6 Ave., northwest of the Habitat ReStore building. Open year-round Thur.-Sun. 9-4pm. |
Dania Beach PATCHWebsiteDania Beach PATCH at a GlanceFarmers: Established by the Dania Beach CRA, PATCH stands for Dania Beach People’s Access to Community Horticulture, a community gardens program ______________________________ Know Your Farmer: Noah Siegel, The Dania Beach PATCHIn 2012, The Dania Beach PATCH (People’s Access to Community Horticulture), a community garden and market, was established and quickly became a source of fresh, organic produce and educational and economic activities for the surrounding neighborhoods. During the pandemic, the garden temporarily closed based on federal guidelines, and severe flooding in April and July 2023 damaged much of the growing operation. The Fruitful Field, which operates gardens in Pompano Beach and the Patricia Davis Community Garden, started a collaborative management partnership with Dania Beach’s Community Redevelopment Agency (DBCRA) in 2024, aimed at providing local organic and educational opportunities through growing produce. Since then, the efforts of DBCRA director Michael Chen and the city commission’s support have reinvigorated the original goal of the PATCH to become a neighborhood gathering space and place for people to get fresh produce, meet friends, and attend workshops and other social activities. Farmer Noah Siegel talked about what’s happening today at this urban garden, which has reopened for the season. Tell us about your background. I started growing at The Fruitful Field while completing my undergraduate degree in non-profit finance. I went on to get a Master’s Degree in Regenerative Agriculture and am currently working towards my Doctorate in Sustainable Agriculture. I’ve traveled across the globe to increase my knowledge about the best-growing practices. My goal and passion is to grow the most nutritious produce for our local communities and revitalize our food system. How does The PATCH serve the community? The PATCH provides local fresh produce to our communities and serves as a beacon for educational opportunities for people wanting to learn about regenerative agriculture and its many methods. The Love Our Nation afterschool program meets regularly has a compost area, and has a plot to grow food here. They work with groups and often perform community service activities. In September, they provided fresh food baskets for 50 senior households in Dania Beach. The C.W. Thomas Community Center is working with The PATCH to incorporate gardening and social activities for their afterschool and senior programs. We have a growing community garden area whereby local residents can “lease” space and grow fresh food for their families. We are also grateful for support from the Community Foundation of Broward, which is funding our long-running Grow City Youth paid internship program for the 2024-25 season. This program, which has been operating since 2014, provides first-time job and leadership skills training while teaching youth about the local food system, from soil development to growing and processing produce. Do you hold regular events and if so, what and when? The Fruitful Field, PATCH staff and dedicated volunteers have spent the summer rebuilding the PATCH. We are transitioning to raised bed gardening, which will help with seasonal flooding and allow the site to increase production. We are working with the City CRA Team to add more fruit trees to help provide produce throughout the hot summer months. The Dania Beach PATCH
